復雜糾結的戀愛關係。但小說不止寫戀愛關係那麼簡單，大段篇幅用於描寫、論述，讓人覺得不像一部愛情小說。不過這些描寫論述加上主人公的細膩的內心獨白正是勞倫斯小說的魅力所在。
