Sue Trinder is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a "baby farmer," who raised her with unusual tenderness, as if Sue were her own. More than Dickens in lesbian form. 我讀到勃朗特姐妹，甚至陀思妥耶夫斯基的風格。第一部分尾聲開始驚喜；第二部分是非常細膩、深刻的人物側寫；而第三部分，尤其是純以聲音和想象編織的絞刑一段，文學性之強令我徹底拜服在作者腳下。傑作！
