A fatal medical diagnosis in 1991 convinced Edward Said that he should leave a record of where he was born and spent his childhood, and so with this memoir he rediscovers the lost Arab world of his early years in Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt.
Said writes with great passion and wit about his family and his friends from his birthplace in Jerusalem, schools in Cairo, and summers in the mountains above Beirut, to boarding school and college in the United States, revealing an unimaginable world of rich, colorful characters and exotic eastern landscapes. Underscoring all is the confusion of identity the young Said experienced as he came to terms with the dissonance of being an American citizen, a Christian and a Palestinian, and, ultimately, an outsider. 相对他的东方主义和知识分子论，我更喜欢这本对青年时代到来之前的回忆录，会让你看到一个心灵和头脑均十分敏感的孩子，如何一边面对另他感到格格不入的学校和严苛家教，一边独自建构了一个独立隐蔽的精神世界；也因此衡量多层面的感受，更多是痛苦，对成就一个作家多么重要。更重要的是，假如没有这些最初的生活经历，也许不会推进后来的Said去关注流亡，东方vs西方，这些明显out of place的主题。
