著者簡介

Julian Patrick Barnes is a contemporary English writer of postmodernism in literature. He has been shortlisted three times for the Man Booker Prize--- Flaubert's Parrot (1984), England, England (1998), and Arthur & George (2005), and won the prize for The Sense of an Ending (2011). He has written crime fiction under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh.

Following an education at the City of London School and Merton College, Oxford, he worked as a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary. Subsequently, he worked as a literary editor and film critic. He now writes full-time. His brother, Jonathan Barnes, is a philosopher specialized in Ancient Philosophy.

He lived in London with his wife, the literary agent Pat Kavanagh, until her death on 20 October 2008.

開篇讓人驚嘆，讀起來卻並不pleasant。敘事節奏：讀到一半纔到達故事簡介的第一句話，最後兩三頁火速抵達真相然後完結。不可靠敘述者：原來前麵常常提到一個傢人，立即說“but she is not part of this story”，是蓄意為之；是他不想說的故事吧

The philosophical and dialectical tone throughout belies a weakeness in story-telling and an over-reliance on conveniently melodramatic plot devices. Still a rather enjoyable and quick read about the unreliability of memory and narratives, of old age and remorse, and of the sense of an ending lol.

語言不錯，敘事抓人，但格局略小（導緻我電影不想看瞭）。把一個度過平庸人生的老年人的心理描寫得很生動，和生命中兩個女人的互動寫得好精彩，男人啊，怎麼一把年紀還能這麼幼稚？結局震驚，但是太過戲劇化以至於影響瞭我對此書的評價。
