Maruyama Masao (1914–1996) was the archetypical 20th-century Japanese intellectual. Immensely influential through his scholarly work in the history of ideas and political science, Maruyama also reached a general audience through his extensive writings in the leading opinion journals of the postwar period. He emerged through those writings as a convincing and outspoken advocate of liberalism and democracy. Karube traces Maruyama’s childhood and youth in prewar and wartime Japan. The biographer depicts decisive experiences that imbued in Maruyama a commitment to democratic ideals and that inspired him to frame those ideals in the context of the individual. KARUBE Tadash specializes in the history of Japanese political thought. Born in Tokyo in 1965, he is a professor in the School of Legal and Political Studies at the University of Tokyo, from which he earned the LL.D. degree in 1994. He is the author of Hikari no ryokoku: Watsuji Tetsuro [The Realm of Light: Politics and Humanity in the Thought of Watsuji Tetsuro] (Sobunsha, 1995) and Utsuriyuku kyoyo [Cultivation of Humanity and Its Changing Forms] (NTT Shuppan, 2007), and is one of the editors of Nihon shisoshi handobukku [Handbook of Japanese Intellectual History] (Shinshokan, 2008).
