本書麵嚮喜歡英語，熱愛中國文化的廣大讀者，是為提高學習者的跨文化交際能力而打造。

全書由16個單元組成，每單元有若乾篇短文，圍繞一個中心話題展開，並配有四種練習形式。（一）文化詞匯題，用漢語列齣重要的文化詞匯，要求在文章中找到對應的英文錶達；（二）文化翻譯題，把用漢語錶達的有關中國文化的句子譯成英語。這種練習在文章中不一定能直接找到對應的句子，而是需要利用文章的內容，對若乾句子進行綜閤概括纔能完成。可以先口譯，再筆譯。（三）文化解釋題，要求用英語對中國文化的某個現象做齣解釋，比如，“大禹治水”的傳說就需要一段文字來加以說明。（四）文化思考題，題目內容基於本單元話題，但信息超齣單元內容，其中相當一部分是跨文化對比研究。

此外，本書附錄提供瞭中國曆史年錶等信息，便於查閱。本書還配有課文錄音和全套課件，供學生和教師選擇使用。

吳鼎民，教授，享受國務院特殊津貼專傢，南京航空航天大學外國語學院院長。研究方嚮之一即中西方文化比較。作為長期研究中外文化的著名學者，作者不僅對中西方文化有深入的研究，同時一直麵嚮中國學生和外籍留學生講授《中國概況》、《中國文化概覽》等課程，在文化碰撞中審視、解構和詮釋中國文化。作者提倡通識教育，強調國人在汲取國外先進文化的同時更應該深刻地理解本國文化，唯有此纔能準確地傳播中國文化的精髓，讓世界真正瞭解中國。
