Political Man: The Social Bases of Politics is an award winning political science book by Seymour Martin Lipset.

The book is an influential analysis of the bases of democracy across the world. One of the important sections is Chapters 2: "Economic Development and Democracy." Larry Diamond and Gary Marks argue that "Lipset's assertion of a direct relationship between economic development and democracy has been subjected to extensive empirical examination, both quantitative and qualitative, in the past 30 years. And the evidence shows, with striking clarity and consistency, a strong causal relationship between economic development and democracy."

The book sold more than 400,000 copies and was translated into 20 languages, including: Vietnamese, Bengali, and Serbo-Croatian.

著者簡介

Seymour Martin Lipset (March 18, 1922–December 31, 2006) was an American political sociologist, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, and the Hazel Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University. His major work was in the fields of political sociology, trade union organization, social stratification, public opinion, and the sociology of intellectual life. He also wrote extensively about the conditions for democracy in comparative perspective.

1960年，青年李普塞特剛齣版瞭他那篇到現在仍然是政治學必讀經典的關於民主政治之社會階級和經濟前提的文獻，然後寫齣瞭這本堪可傳世的書。以亞裏士多德的“政治人”理念為基礎，總體觀點與文獻無異，堅持有什麼樣的人就有什麼樣的社會和政治，經濟發展、教育興起和中産階級崛起解離瞭傳統極端意識形態，是支持現代民主社會的必要條件，並記錄瞭戰前10年到戰後10年西方各民主國傢經濟發展及社會轉變導緻傳統左右分野衰落、共識型政治興起的情況。值得注意的是，國內政治學入門課經常辯論的經濟發展是否誘緻民主，雖然在李普塞特看來比較肯定，但他更為強調的是“社會”的一麵，即經濟發展的社會後果，教育擴大、信息流通、自願組織興起、個人品味提升，尤其教育幾乎與經濟一樣重要，且均非一日之功。若以GDP和政體關係批評此論，實大謬。
