Time capsules are great classroom projects, but how many students actually know about their origins? The idea of a time capsule probably come from ancient peoples who included artifacts in burial chambers -- or perhaps from builders over the centuries who have included objects in cornerstones of new buildings with the idea that they will be speaking to the generation alive when the building falls down. True time capsules, however, are designed to be opened on a particular date, and they are a modern invention.
