Renderingis one of the most exerting and challenging
aspects of producing picturesinany area ofthe graphic arts .Like every other aspect of the creative arts, rendering has
principles that are basedon truthsevolved over a number of
cent uries . These principlesareused to introduce the illusion
of realism into two-dimensional representations of three-
dimensional objects and views . Inthis context the term 're-
alism' means photographic realism, which is accepted in our
society as the graphic truth.
Though ren dering isa broad and complex subject itcan
be made much simpler if the basic principles are understood
from the very beginning. The ability to understand and use
these basic principles forms the foundation ofvisuallite-
racy, which is essential to anyone wishing to practise inany
area of art, design or graphics, and is attained byfirst learn-ing tosee and understanding what isseen. Inthis context, I
believe that seeing isa learnedskill and tolearntoseeone
mus t first learn how to look and what to lookfor.Objects
are seen ascomplex images towhichperspective, lightand
shade, shadows, values, contrasts, atmosphericeffects, tex-
tures and colours all contribute. Consequently agrea tdeal
must be knownabouttheseelements and theprinciples of
their graphic interpretation before what isseencanbe
understood and usedfor competent pictorial represen-
tations. Rendering, therefore, canbe described as the pro-
cessof interpreting graphically what isseen and what is
known.
