Walt Whitman and Odysseus Elytis: Beyond Being and Time is an analysis and interpretation of Walt Whitman and Odysseus Elytis's body of work in general and The Axion Esti and 'Song of Myself,' in particular. Through the use of extensive research, the work suggests that there is a common ground that Whitman and Elytis share, that is to say, their philosophy on language and poetry. The study also examines and defines Americanness and Greekness and what they mean to each poet. Since their country of origin is much more than a birthright, identity and a sense of belonging are pertinent to both poets' work. It further argues, through the use of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's paradigm, that Elytis and Whitman are major poets who write in a minor language. Additionally, existentialism, metaphysics, authenticity and truth have been of great importance to both poets. As a result, Transcendentalist and Surrealist ideals, the role and the importance of the poet in society help to illuminate and formulate a new interpretation of The Axion Esti and 'Song of Myself.'

furthermore, this book does not aim to provide a biographical sketch of either Walt Whitman or Odysseus Elytis, nor does it delve into the historical and social contexts in which they lived and wrote. You will not find accounts of Whitman's life in Brooklyn or his experiences as a nurse during the Civil War, nor will you discover details about Elytis's life in Greece or his involvement in the Greek resistance during World War II. The content herein does not offer any critical essays, literary interpretations, or academic analyses of their respective bodies of work. The intricate patterns of Whitman's free verse, or the lyrical beauty and existential weight of Elytis's poetry, are not the subject matter of this volume. There will be no exploration of Whitman's democratic vision or Elytis's engagement with Byzantine art and Greek mythology. This book is not a comparative study that seeks to draw parallels or contrasts between these two monumental figures in world poetry. It does not investigate how their different cultural backgrounds and personal experiences shaped their artistic output. Therefore, you will not find discussions on the influence of American transcendentalism on Whitman, or the impact of Surrealism on Elytis. In essence, this book is not about the poetry of Walt Whitman, nor is it about the poetry of Odysseus Elytis. It does not contain any of their poems, nor does it offer any insights into their poetic techniques, themes, or philosophical underpinnings. Any expectation of finding literary criticism, biographical information, or comparative analysis concerning these two poets will not be met by the pages within.
