"Eighteenth-Century Writing from Wales: Bards and Britons" examines Welsh writing in English in the context of recent critical debates concerning the rise of cultural nationalism and the 'invention' of Great Britain as a nation in the eighteenth century. This study investigates the ways in which Anglophone literature from and about Wales imagines the nation and its culture in a range of genres including poetry, fiction, letters, and religious writing. The particular aim of this book is to gauge the extent to which Welsh writers approve, contest and/or shape emergent models of Britishness in the period. This is the first study to discuss Welsh literature in English in the context of current thinking about the literary negotiation of Britain in the eighteenth century. The range of texts to be discussed and the historical chronology of this project are unique and represent an exciting addition to current scholarship on pre-1800 Welsh literary culture.
