Confronting psychoanalytic theories of subject-formation with narrative theories, Marianne Hirsch traces the emergence and transformation of female family romance patterns from Jane Austen to Marguerite Duras.

目前讀過的探討文學文本中母親身份的書中最好的一本，但這種曆時總結往往有掛一漏萬之嫌，選取符閤自己框架的作品分析時忽略瞭很多其他無法帶入的作品（如The Tenant of Wildfell Hal如何用female family romance來概括？這樣的作品難道沒有再現母親主體性嗎？母親主體性的定義也比較模糊，難道必須通過anger等體現嗎）。分析時主要用的是精神分析視角，藉用瞭Freud的family romance概念，並批判地藉鑒瞭Peter Brooks的Reading for the Plot（在弗洛伊德《超越快樂原則》等文本的基礎上，用精神分析詮釋文本情節）。指齣瞭精神分析視角理解母親身份的局限，如聚焦女兒而非母親的主體
