本书作者柯克帕特里克・塞尔生于纽约州的伊萨卡，业于康奈尔大学，著有《大学生争取民主社会史》、《加纳的国家与人民》。
本书主要叙述美国南部权势集团的兴起及其对传统的东部权势集团的挑战。作者分析了第二次世界大战结束以后美国南部经济发展的原因、特征，以及随之而崛起的政治势力
