apart from the typical Maugham's brilliant-as-always style of depicting the mental activities of individuals in a society with strong ethic orders, as well as the evolving storyline in face of conflicts in different tempos, i find this book having fewer remarkable points than of Human Bondage and the Moon and Six Pence.
评分活在一个是非被绝然分割的所谓文明社会中，其残酷足以令任何心怀疑义又脆弱的人走向自我毁灭，任何时候不妨问问麻木的人们，“When you do anything, are you ever tormented by a doubt whether you are doing right or wrong?”毛姆后期作品中对文明社会的质疑在这本早期的小说里表现得更为激烈，只是这个时候的他似乎尚处于迷茫之中，在对与错的迷宫中找不到出路，唯有以死收场。
