罗兹曼，美国普林斯顿大学社会学教授。主要研究兴趣是中国、日本和俄国这类社会的相互对比与彼此理解，也兼及有关现代化与前现代的宏观社会学比较，或者东亚与西方发展路径的比较。著有《清代中国的人口与市场调解》等，编有《中国的现代化》、《东亚地区：儒家遗产及其现代调适》、《日本对戈尔巴乔夫时代的回应》等。

本来不想写短评也不想评分，但是看到这么多高分书评不禁有些担忧。本书不是理解中国的佳作。充满了冷战时期的印记，以及对西方中心论的挣扎。虽然试图摆脱西方中心论视角，但是对“现代化”的定义实际上还是以西方为模版，还是基于impact-response的理论框架中，有非常多含混不清、未经证明的假设，而且这一基本概念的定义实际上模糊不清。更不必说对历史的抽象分析过程有许多漏洞。最大的问题是，以一个抽象的概念来衡量复杂的历史过程，虽然可以设立一个具体的评判标准，但是却不可避免地过滤掉了很多当时重要的过程，无论是对中国还是对西方，都失去了“正在发生的”、“陌生的”历史感，也就丧失了通过历史认识、反思现实的机会。
