《印中搜聞》是新教傳教士在馬六甲創辦的最早的外文期刊，側重對印度和中國傳教情況的報導，介紹瞭中國的佛、道和一些民間信仰。由於清政府實行閉關政策,中西交往阻斷。在這種情況下，以英文齣版的《印中搜聞》上刊載的有關中國方方麵麵的報導,便成為西方人瞭解中國現貌的主要資料來源。《印中搜聞》創辦不久,便在歐美學術界和漢學界産生瞭很大影響,至今仍得到當今漢學傢的很高評價,成為最有價值的傳教會曆史記載之一。
