Zola's work often portray groups of humans in the grip of circumstances beyond their control, often destined to be destroyed in monumental catastrophes. His masterpiece Germinal was an eloquent protest against the inhuman working conditions common in late Nineteenth-Century European factories and mines. In the story, Etienne Lantier is an out-of-work railway worker who by sheer luck has secured a job in the coal mine called Le Voreux (a name suggesting a voracious beast which consumes workers wholesale). 評分 評分这是目前看的第一本真正意义上描写底层人民反抗的小说，全文透露出一种沉重的黑色和浓浓的呛人味。结尾点题萌芽，萌芽意味着新生的开始，也意味着之前的失败。这本小说的伟大之处在于没有刻意的去赞美工人，贬低资本家，而是如实的描写煤矿工人的苦难生活，长期吸煤的身体情况...
