The island sits inconspicuously in a lake in
the Adirondacks.
Last winter there was a tragedy at the lake.
Pete Meyer lost his life while ice-fishing. Nohody
saw what came out of the lake and took Pete un-
der. His widow, Lynette, and his son, Pete, Jr.,
haven t forgotten-but almost everyone else has.
The inn called Many Pines stands beside the
lake, looking out at Dog Islaud. Its owner, Arnaut
Berge, is fond of his guests, proud of running the
kind of inn that families like to revisit each sum-
mer. His only sadness is the death of his wife, by
drowning, eight years ago in a tragic accident on
the lake.
In summer, the boaters who look down into
the water are surprised to see the roof of the
house that used to stand on the island. They don t
like hearing what happened ten years ago to the
family that lived there...
