OVERNIGHT, spring came down from the seven hills and
fell on him like a curse. Every year it had been that way in Rome; in
not one of the six Aprils had it been otherwise. It was as if the
greenery were at war with the blackness of his cassock, as if the gusts
of the new season tore at his turned collar. The Ave Marias and the
Kyries and the Glorias seemed swept up in a worldly wind. The
spiritual pains of Lent were over and the earthly pleasures of Easter
were on the hillsides, and guiltily in his heart.
He should have known the morning would be that way; the night
had been full of trespass. He had bad the dream again, the old
nightmare that he had hoped would never return to plague him,
which had come only once during the eleven years of his priesthood.
The animal fondling him, the dark seductive creature moving out of
the mists, kissing his mouth, sucking his tongue, pulling at his nipples
andLhis penis; then the awakening in wetness, and all the old shames, and Hail Mary ,full of grace,DEUS NOSTER REFUGIUM ET VIRTUS,with every verse inappropriate to the transgression.
