本书以探索的方式，带着对建筑意义的疑问，自20世纪建筑运动的初期开始，以建筑流派为线索和脉络，并依据史实，从建筑自身和建筑师所要表达的意义两方面入手，做出了深入浅出的分析和探讨。
本书的主要内容有8章，分别从机器建筑、城市和建筑乌托邦、后现代主义、类型学、新城市主义、洛杉矶的建筑实践、批判的地域主义和建筑现象学这些方面来论述文章的主题。加之前面的导言、后面的后记、文献目录和图片资料索引，本书总共由l2个部分组成。
本书既可作为高等院校相关建筑、设计专业师生的教材或教学参考书，亦可作为毕业论文或研究报告的资料用书，对建筑师、规划师以及建筑设计相关从业人员或师生都具有极好的参考借鉴价值。
作者简介
沈克宁，北京人，祖籍浙江。1985年毕业于北京工业大学，后入中国建筑设计研究院历史与理论研究所攻读中国古代建筑史专业1988年毕业留所，同年赴美，获伯克利加州大学建筑学硕士。笔耕不止，有数十篇论文分别发表在国内主要建筑杂志上，尤其是《建筑师》，《世界建筑》和“建筑学报》。专著有《建筑现象学》（中国建筑工业出版社），与人合著《人居相依》（上海科技出版社）等。
