《乌托邦之后：政治信仰的衰落》是施克莱出版的首部作品，是以她的博士论文为基础，做了大量修改写就的。这本书属于思想史研究。施克莱站在“二战”结束后、西方对启蒙运动以来的历史，特别是两次世界大战以来的历史感到灰心丧气的时候写了这样一本书。这本书的基本观点是，启蒙时代那种宏大、乐观的政治理论已经失败了，现在已经无法再提出这种类型的政治理论。事实上，不仅是启蒙主流失败了，启蒙运动的批判者——主要是浪漫主义思潮——同样处在一种非常沮丧衰颓的状态，无法对时代问题作出回应。这本书对启蒙思想、浪漫主义等重要的现代思潮作了极具洞见的诊断，奠定了施克莱对西方现代政治思想史的基本理解。

朱迪丝•N.施克莱
Judith N. Shklar （1928—1992）
美国政治理论家，哈佛大学政治学教授，历任美国政治学与法哲学协会主席、美国政治科学协会主席等，并入选美国艺术与科学学院。对法国和美国政治思想传统有精深研究，对约翰•罗尔斯、理查德•罗蒂等人产生过重要影响。
代表作品有：《平常的恶》《不正义的多重面孔》《美国公民身份：寻求接纳》《政治思想与政治思想家》等。
