SLIGHTLY more than a decade has passed since the publica-
tion of Robert W. Smuts s study of Women and Work in
America. It is both necessary and desirable that this paper-
back edition carry a new preface. It is necessary so that
the reader can learn about the transformations in the role
of women in the labor market that have occurred since
the late 1950 s; it is desirable so that attention can be called
to some of the research that has been carried out since
then by the Conservation of Human Resources Project
at Columbia University to which Robert Smuts was at-
tached when he wrote his book, as well as to investiga-
tions carried out by others.
In 1966 and 1967 the Conservation Project published
Life Styles of Educated Women, by Eli Ginzberg et al.,
and Educated American Women: Self Portraits, by Ginz-
berg and Yohalem, Columbia University Press. The bibli-
ography in the former volume calls attention to the major
studies that appeared in the years following the appearance
of Smuts s work.
