The uniqueness of the human being has been under indirectattack for some time now from the implications of modern Dar-winian biology. By establishing incremental linkages, a continuity,from the lower to the higher species, evolutio_n has emphasizedour similarity to lower creatures without explaining the enormousim_m_.plications of those differences that do exist. Currently we are witnessing from other sources an even moreserious assault on the singular worth of the human animal. Theecological disasters and the threat of atomic annihilation haveshaken our arrogant nineteenth-century confidence in human sci-ence and technology. We assumed that we had created the toolsthat would eventually eradicate misery and restore us to a newGarden of justice and tranquillity. Instead, we are hoist with our own petards. We are a failure in our own eyes, and that is always a dangerous and unstable state, whether for the individual or the species. We are losing faith, not just in our institutions, but in ourselves.
