HE Romans were the first to come and establish here
a fort,
Building a house to the glory of God was what Paulinus
sought,
His church became a "mynster," the flame of learning
was ablaze,
Until the Conqueror decreed St Peter's should be razed.
Yet from that ruin and others, a splendid Minster was
reborn,
With windows "rose" and
"conscience prykke, " and Ulph 's
ivory drinking horn,
A tribute raised in gratitude, respect
and veneration,
To thank the Father for the Son, and
the promise of salvation.
