FOREWORD
In my first book, Dr. Baiter s Child Sense, I tried to help parents find
practical solutions to the common problems of early childhood--from
birth to five years of age. Underlying many of those common problems
were conflicts between parent and child. Although I talked about disci-
pline in that book--encouraging parents to look upon the goal of disci-
pline as self-government for the child, and to avoid very harsh or
punitive measures that might harm the child s self-esteem--I felt that
the subiect of discipline was of such magnitude, and of such concern to
parents, that it warranted a closer look.
This book is that closer look. As in Dr. Balter s Child Sense, parents
concerns and questions have launched my discussions of discipline,
which are both explanatory and practical in nature. In this book I am
able to provide a more detailed examination of what continues to be one
of the most important issues between a parent and a child. This book is
also somewhat larger in scope, covering the years between infancy and
the preteen stage of development. It is my hope that parents about to
embark on child rearing, or parents currently concerned with these mat-
ters, will be able to use the two books together to form stronger, health-
ier and happier relationships with their children.
11
