Should he follow the sound of the drums?<br > He could hear it all beginning again: the nervous rattle of<br > practicing drums， the shuffle that precedes the parade. The sound<br > was almost irresistible， because in American politics it is when the<br > parade is falling in that it is most exciting. He had followed those<br > sounds for twenty years， across the country and back， again and<br > again， and up with the crescendo to the conventions， on through the<br > rallies with pretty girls in shakos and pompoms kicking in town<br > squares and crowds yelling in big-city arenas until， suddenly on a<br > November night， there would be a new President.<br > There is no excitement anywhere in the world， short of war， to<br >match the excitement of an American Presidential campaign. He<br >had loved that excitement and had made it his profession to be a<br >storyteller of elections. Yet as summer faded in i975 and the<br >campaign for the Presidency reached speed， the more stories he<br >gathered， the more confused he became.<br > Was there more to learn in one more story of the making of a<br >President? There was something new in what Americans sought as<br >they passed on their power--but how to define it? 白修德（1915—1986），本名西奧多·H·懷特（Theodore Harold White），美國記者。1915年生於波士頓，童年坎坷，以賣報為生；後入哈佛大學讀書，師從漢學傢費正清，學習中文和中國曆史、文化；畢業後任《時代》周刊駐重慶記者，采寫瞭大量關於中國抗日戰 爭的新聞報道，寫齣《中國的驚雷》（Thunder Out of China）。迴國後連續進行瞭四屆美國總統選舉的報道，寫齣《美國總統的誕生》（The Making of the President），其中1960年跟蹤記錄約翰•肯尼迪參選直至獲勝的報道使他獲得瞭1962年普利策奬。1986年因癌癥逝世於紐約。
