本书收录了30多位英国、南美北美、斯坎地纳维亚、印度、太平洋地区的人类学家和考古学家1994年第三届世界考古学大会上前针对landscape的发言。较有代表性地勾画出经历了postmodern诸说之后的人文学者们在这一话题上的观点与再认识。跟景观建筑师看landscape毕竟有着诸多的不同。对于后学的再评价，是显而易见的。不过，在此方面已经著论颇丰的腕儿像Tilley, Ingold，都未出现。（主编之一已经过世）。
