本书是美国著名汉学家梅祖麟先生的论文选集，共收录梅先生有代表性的关于汉语语法史、闽语史、声调史和汉藏语比较的语言学论文共21篇，前面有一篇自序，后附石锋和朝奋对梅先生的访谈录和梅先生论著目录。所有论文均在《中国语文》、《史语所集刊》等权威杂志上发表过，影响很大，学术价值相当高，其观点常常被海内外的学者引用，在世界范围内大大推动了汉语言研究的发展。
