《学习者策略教师指南》共分六章。第一章首先定义学习者策略的意义，然后介绍学习者策略的类型，以及这些策略对语言学习的作用。定义学习者策略可以有多种角度：从使用学习者策略之后带来的好处看学习者策略；从使用学习者策略之后产生的行为变化看学习者策略；从对学习者策略的认识看学习者策略。学习中有三大类策略对学习十分重要：认知策略、元认知策略和社会／情感策略。
第二章说明课程中关注策略的原因：使用学习者策略可以提高学习的效果和效率；使用学习者策略还可以提高学习者的学习动机，增加其练习语言的时间，使其最终成为独立的学习者。
第三章介绍将策略融入课程教学的三种方式：一、集中式策略培训，即集中一段时间专门培训策略，如一个月、一个学期等等；二、融入式策略培训，即把培训渗透到日常教学中；三、辅助式策略培训，即将策略培训放在学习任务后，通过反思策略的运用，提高策略意识，进而提高策略使用水平。本章还涉及到策略培训的规划、监控和评估的问题。
