Taking the region of North Gujarat in India as a case study, this book documents the ill effects of over-exploitation of groundwater. The region's water problems have attracted international attention because of their implications for society in terms of reducing the viability of irrigated agriculture and their impact on community health. The authors use several new methodologies, analytical procedures and criteria to analyze groundwater use in agriculture, the economic valuation of groundwater and water intensity of milk production. The findings are used to draw policy conclusions regarding the tools for managing groundwater in other regions with similar use and resources.
