Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) perhaps the most recognizable of the Impressionist portraitists was a painter who combined classical and modern techniques to portray a singularly intimate vision of the late-nineteenth century Parisian life of leisure he knew so well. He was one of four artists who developed and evolved what would come to be called the Impressionist movement. As a colorist and portrait painter, Renoir's contributions to the highly influential Impressionist movement were substantial.
