因為一場election,開始認真讀一些分析democrats問題的書。這本書係統分析瞭meritocracy, welfare system, and economic inequality，都是導緻大選失敗的原因。真正的原因眾說紛紜，但是這個社會一些根深蒂固的問題卻是無法迴避的. identity politics不是solution.

16年川普的一大部分選票來自中西部的製造業工人。左派選民為何“變節”？作者分析說，90年代起，民主黨開始走中間派路綫，無視工人階級的訴求，轉而為專業人士(professionals)代言。這些人是應試教育的佼佼者，信奉meritocracy，看不上傳統的平等主義，對藍領工人的睏境沒有共情。NAFTA使美國製造業崗位大量流失？全球化的浪潮無可阻擋，工人需要訓練新技能，適應“信息時代”。銀行去管製化？我們要鼓勵金融人纔的“創造性”，纔能增加美國金融業的全球競爭力。裁減社會福利？窮人應當努力工作掙錢而不是懶在傢裏等著國傢養。精英們鼓吹的“創新”與其說是創新，不如說是返祖，返祖到瞭前工會時代。雖然有瞭兩黨選舉，但是個哪個政黨都不代錶working poor的利益。
