The essays collected in this volume, except for Hans Joas’s chapter and the
Introduction, are to be published also in Italian, alongside others, in a volume
under the editorship of Massimo Borlandi (Emile Durkheim, Roma: La Nuova
Italia Scientifica). The Publishers and the Editor would like to thank Massimo
Borlandi, who originally commissioned the essays, and La Nuova Italia
Scientifica, via Sardegna 50, 00187 Roma, for making the English language
publication of Emile Durkheim: Sociologist and Moralist possible. Joas’s chapter
is based on a section of his book Die Kreativität des Handelns. Making these
texts available to an Anglophone audience has also required the effort of several
translators, including H. Sutcliffe for the chapters by Filloux, Besnard, Müiller,
and Isambert, and for the Durkheim material in the Andrews chapter, and Jeremy
Gaines and Doris Jones for the chapter by Joas. These chapters underwent
additional changes after leaving the translators’ hands. The final manuscript was
typed by Karen Kier and Norma Walker.
