The Arts and Crafts movement flowered in the 1870s and 80s as a reaction to the decorative excesses of the mid-nineteenth century. At its heart was a search for a return to simplicity and honesty of construction. There is no single style that represents Arts and Crafts; an interior could be exotic and precious with rich colours and patterns, or homely and plain, as long as it adhered to the ideal of hand craftsmanship. The craft workshops and guilds, idealized imitations of their medieval counterparts, produced furniture, textiles, metalwork and ceramics, which raised the status of such objects from household articles to the decorative arts.
