A land of fire and ice, Iceland never ceases to astonish. This unique country, active volcanically, with hot springs and floes of lava side by side with glaciers in its deserted, rocky landscapes, is home to some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. The vast Vatnajokull Glacier - the largest in Europe - and the volcanic island of Surtsey, which was created by eruptions of basalt from the sea off Iceland's coast from 1963 to 1967, are only two of the country's breathtaking sights.
