From Library Journal These 44 essays bring a feminist, activist perspective to bear on the AIDS crisis, examining the impact of sexism, racism, classism, ageism, and homophobia on its management. The articulate and nonjudgmental voices include whites and women of color; lesbians, bisexuals, and heterosexuals; prisoners, sex workers, and substance abusers; women with AIDS, HIV+ and HIV women. Whereas first-person narratives predominated in AIDS: The Women , edited by Ines Rieder and Patricia Ruppelt (Cleis Pr . , 1988), this anthology contains polemical manifestos as well, many listing urgent demands. The glossary, index, extensive annotated bibliography, and list of resources help make this a valuable tool for general readers and specialists alike.- James E. Van Buskirk, San Francisco P.L.Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by PCP A collection of writings produced by the ACT UP/NY Women & AIDS Book Group, including essays on political activism, safer sex, prostitution and pregnancy, this is an excellent resource, notable for its much needed coverage of the politics of AIDS for women. Anthologies are often the best single source of information on any topic, offering diverse perspectives, interests, approaches and styles of writing, and this book is no exception. Some entries are personal accounts, others impassioned political statements, while other entries are informative essays on treatment, drug trials, HIV antibody testing and legal issues of concern to women with AIDS. Especially welcome are entries that address AIDS in relation to women in prison, lesbians, African-American and African-Caribbean women, Asian women and Hispanic women. The list of resources and bibliography is excellent, although not exhaustive, and the videography is exceptional. See all Editorial Reviews
