It covers the first semester of college-level beginner's Japanese, and contains 14 lessons, each representing one week's instruction. It is based on the more traditional approach of segmenting the language to be acquired according to structures rather than functions, and gives grammatical explanations in enough detail to be used as a reference. Intended for use in college courses, "Elementary Japanese Volume One" can also be used for individual study as it consists of a dialogue, usage notes, grammar notes, exercises, new kanji and explanation, and new vocabulary.

评分比起國內教材從最基礎五十音開始，打好基礎再往上層學的模式，美式語言教材更不強調學好基礎再學更多的模式，而是一開始就以簡單對話的形式甩齣一大堆初學者根本看不懂的東西，然後再慢慢補足基礎知識。這樣的好處，大概是在讓學生懵懵懂懂的過程中，降低學習準入門檻，哪怕學生對剛開始的知識點隻懂50%，也不追求把每個知識點教透徹瞭再move on，而是讓長時間的知識復現來完成perfection
