Almost before he knows it, Herman Broder, refugee and survivor of World War II, has three wives: Yadwiga, the Polish peasant who hid him from the Nazis; Masha, his beautiful and neurotic true love; and Tamara, his first wife, miraculously returned from the dead. 评分victims of their own personalities and fate. 过去和伤痕都很难说消失就消失，人物对信仰对未来的理解也都各不相同。习惯了躲藏习惯了远离人群的herman即使面对masha这个也许唯一他真正爱过的女人也无法保持百分百的信任更别谈付出。仿佛重生的tamara成为了herman的鬼魅信仰。herman被过去被incapability of making choices所束缚折磨，最终以他标志性的uncertainty消失在了叙事中。
