On one level Missing Person is a detective thriller, a 1950s film noir mix of smoky cafÃƒÂ©s, illegal passports, and insubstantial figures crossing bridges in the fog. On another level, it is also a haunting meditation on the nature of the self. 著者簡介

帕特裏剋•莫迪亞諾，法國當代著名作傢，2014年諾貝爾文學奬獲得者。

莫迪亞諾1945年生於巴黎郊外布洛涅—比揚古地區，父親是猶太金融企業傢，母親是比利時演員。1968年莫迪亞諾在伽利瑪齣版社齣版處女作《星形廣場》一舉成名。1972年的《環城大道》獲法蘭西學院小說大奬，1978年的《暗店街》獲得龔古爾奬。1996年，莫迪亞諾獲得法國國傢文學奬。他還分彆於2010年和2012年獲得法蘭西學院奇諾•德爾•杜卡基金會世界奬和奧地利歐洲文學奬這兩項終身成就奬。

莫迪亞諾的小說常常通過尋找、調查、迴憶和探索，將視野轉迴到從前的歲月，描寫“消逝”的過去；也善於運用象徵手法，通過某一形象錶現齣深遠的含義。

自1968年至今，莫迪亞諾已經齣版近三十部小說，在三十多個國傢齣版。

除瞭最早的三部麯，Modiano的小說都一樣，殘缺的敘事者在失重的時間裏尋找自己，並發現無法找迴。輕柔到沒有形體的語言，節製到極點的敘事，唯一的執著是巴黎數不完的街道名。這部小說由於設定，幾乎像是Modiano風格的模版，倒不算是寫的最好的。

It seems like the author wanted to express the "I consist of my past; I am built from my past, so I am nothing without my past" kind of feeling. I always believe that my past doesn't define me; but if it doesn't, what does? The present "me" is composed by the past "me", and the future "me" doesn't yet exist. Only the past is real...
