作为年鉴学派第三代成员, Aries的这本小册子展现出与他同时代年鉴史家一样的对于心态史的关怀。该书检视了自中世纪以来西方社会死亡心态之变迁。认为在早期中世纪死亡是一件非常简单平和的事，人们在自己的床上等待死亡。人们接受死亡认为这是浑然天成不可逃避的命运。但从12至14世纪，死亡被私人化，成为人们自我意识实现的场域。不论是死亡仪式还是墓碑装饰都变得私人化。18世纪开始，死亡从私人化转向他人化和浪漫化，被视为与活人世界的断裂。人们开始惧怕死亡，特别是亲人的死亡。20世纪，现代的死亡出现了。所谓“现代死亡”是一种为了保持快乐幸福而忌讳不可见的死亡。死亡场所从家里转向医院，从一种仪式性的事件转变为技术化的现象。作者在书尾呼吁我们重新燃起对于Destiny的天真信心，在这个物欲横流的时代，值得深思。
