Collins considers the effect of the postmodern situation on biblical, primarily Old Testament, criticism over the last three decades. Engaging and even-handed, Collins examines the quest of historical criticism to objectively establish a text's basic meaning. Accepting that the Bible may no longer provide secure "foundations" for faith, Collins still highlights its ethical challenge to be concerned for "the other" - a challenge central both to Old Testament ethics and to the teaching of Jesus.

对20世纪后30年希伯来圣经研究新方法、新趋势的综述与评介。第一章总论。第二章讲疑古派（Davies, Thompson, Lemche, Dever, Finkelstein）。第三章讲解放神学和后殖民。第四章讲女性主义（Trible, Meyers, Fuchs）。第五章讲考古发现和迦南宗教。最后一章讲圣经神学和后现代。优点是内容和书目都很丰富，是很好的购书指南、阅读指南和研究指南，作者的观点非常宽容。缺点是，讲到后现代的具体解读还行，一到后现代理论总括，我只能不耐烦地快进，所以最后一章后一半基本看不下去。总之，是新理论解读圣经的很实用的入门书。#只有出差才能读书

An excellent survey for biblical methods and theories in the postmodern age. Hermeneutics of suspicion, as an antithesis to hermeneutics of faith, brought many challenges to the sacrality of the biblical texts but also open up many opportunities to approaching the texts differently. This is the multivocality of the biblical texts.
