艾略特，T.S.（1888～1965）英國詩人，文學評論傢。齣生於美國密蘇裏州聖路易斯。祖父是華盛頓大學的奠基人，父親經商，母親熱心慈善事業並從事詩歌創作。艾略特於1906年進入哈佛大學攻讀哲學，在此期間還研究詩人多恩和但丁以及伊麗莎白和詹姆士時代的劇作傢，這對他日後從事的文學批評起瞭重要作用。1908年他從賽門斯（1865～1945）的論著《文學的象徵運動》這部書接觸到法國現代派詩作，影響瞭他1915～1917年間的詩歌創作。第一次世界大戰爆發時，他在英國牛津大學研讀希臘哲學，1916年完成論述英國新黑格爾派布拉德萊哲學的哈佛大學博士論文。1915年是他人生道路的重大轉摺：放棄以哲學研究為終身職業，轉嚮詩歌創作和文學批評。在倫敦定居後，起初教授拉丁文與法文，1919至1922年任銀行職員，同時擔任《自我中心者》雜誌副編輯。l922年起齣任具有世界影響的文學評論季刊《標準》編輯，直到1939年停刊。自1925年起至逝世他都兼任費柏齣版公司董事。1927年他成為英國公民並加入英國國教，聲稱自己“文學上是古典主義者，政治上是保王派，宗教上是英國天主教徒”。1947年獲哈佛大學名譽博士學位，1948年因詩歌《四個四重奏》獲諾貝爾文學奬金。被認為是第二次世界大戰前用英語寫作的最有影響的詩人，對英美現代派文學及新批評派評論起瞭開拓作用。主要詩作包括《普魯弗洛剋的情歌》(1915)、《一位夫人的寫照》(1915)、《小老頭》(1919)、《荒原》（1922）、《空心人》（1925）、《灰星期三》（1930）、《四個四重奏》（1935～1941）。最著名的詩劇是《大教堂凶殺案》（1935）。最有影響的文學評論有《傳統與個人纔能》（1917）、《批評的功能》（1923）、《詩歌的用途和批評的用途》（1933）。

等車練的時間看個書教練還唧唧歪歪的真是不能忍！
评分圖書館藉來的書滿是辨認不齣來的筆記。個人淺薄的看法，Burnt Norton稍顯賣弄和不成熟，移行和韻律都非常生澀，但是到East Coker就簡直有如神助，中間那段即使能背重看也還是震住瞭。看原文於是終於明白瞭Little Gidding的好，不斷連綿而來急促的alliteration和腳韻。可怎麼說呢，我還是不夠進去。找個真心愛的詩人，為找那一行詩，真難呐。
