具体描述

This guide is based on a study of referees' reports and letters from journal editors on the reasons why papers written by non-native researchers are rejected due to problems with English usage, style and grammar. It draws on English-related errors from around 5000 papers written by non-native authors, 500 abstracts by PhD students, and over 1000 hours of teaching researchers how to write and present research papers.

English for Research: Usage, Style, and Grammar covers those areas of English usage that typically cause researchers difficulty: articles (a/an, the), uncountable nouns, tenses (e.g., simple present, simple past, present perfect), modal verbs, active vs. passive form, relative clauses, infinitive vs. -ing form, the genitive, noun strings, link words (e.g., moreover, in addition), quantifiers (e.g., each vs. every), word order, prepositions, acronyms, abbreviations, numbers and measurements, punctuation, and spelling. Due to its focus on the specific errors that repeatedly appear in papers written by non-native authors, this manual is an ideal study guide for use in universities and research institutes.

The book is cross-referenced with the following titles:

• English for Academic Research: Grammar Exercises

• English for Academic Research: Vocabulary Exercises

• English for Academic Research: Writing Exercises

• English for Writing Research Papers

Academic English: A Practical Guide to Research Writing This book is designed to equip students and early-career researchers with the essential English language skills required for academic research. It delves into the nuances of academic discourse, providing practical strategies and examples to navigate the complexities of scholarly communication. Key Areas Covered: Understanding Academic Conventions: The book begins by exploring the fundamental principles of academic writing, including clarity, conciseness, objectivity, and formal tone. It differentiates academic English from other forms of English, highlighting the specific expectations of research-oriented audiences. Readers will learn to identify and employ appropriate vocabulary, sentence structures, and rhetorical devices common in academic contexts. Reading and Analyzing Academic Texts: A critical component of effective research is the ability to critically engage with existing literature. This section guides readers on how to deconstruct academic articles, identify research questions, understand methodologies, and evaluate findings. It offers techniques for summarizing, synthesizing, and critiquing scholarly works, thereby building a strong foundation for one's own research. Structuring Research Papers: The book provides a comprehensive framework for organizing various sections of a research paper, from the introduction and literature review to methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. It offers detailed guidance on crafting compelling introductions that state the research problem and objectives, developing coherent literature reviews that demonstrate a grasp of the field, and presenting findings in a clear and logical manner. Emphasis is placed on the logical flow of ideas and the effective use of transitional phrases to ensure smooth readability. Writing for Clarity and Precision: This section focuses on the art of precise language in academic writing. It addresses common pitfalls such as ambiguity, vagueness, and colloquialisms, offering practical solutions for clearer expression. Readers will learn to use hedging language appropriately, avoid jargon where unnecessary, and select precise terminology to convey their ideas accurately. The importance of sentence variety and avoiding overly complex structures is also discussed. Mastering Academic Vocabulary and Grammar: The book provides an extensive overview of academic vocabulary, focusing on common collocations, nominalization, and the use of sophisticated but accessible terminology. It also tackles common grammatical challenges faced by non-native English speakers in academic writing, including verb tense consistency, article usage, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement within complex sentences. Citation and Referencing: Understanding and correctly implementing citation and referencing styles is paramount in academic integrity. This section explains the principles behind academic referencing and provides practical guidance on common citation styles (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago – specific styles may be detailed within the book). Readers will learn how to integrate source material ethically and avoid plagiarism. Presenting Data and Visuals: Research findings are often best communicated through visuals. This part of the book guides readers on how to effectively present data using tables, figures, and graphs, ensuring they are clearly labeled, self-explanatory, and appropriately integrated into the text. It also covers the language used to describe and interpret these visuals. Reviewing and Editing: The writing process does not end with the first draft. This section emphasizes the importance of self-editing and peer review. It provides systematic approaches to reviewing one's own work for clarity, coherence, accuracy, and adherence to academic standards. Techniques for constructive feedback are also offered for those involved in peer review. Specific Research Genres (Examples): While not exhaustive, the book may include guidance on writing specific types of academic texts such as research proposals, abstracts, conference papers, and journal articles, highlighting the unique requirements of each. Target Audience: This book is an indispensable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students across all disciplines undertaking research projects, thesis writing, or preparing publications. It is also beneficial for early-career academics and researchers seeking to enhance their English academic writing proficiency. Approach: The book adopts a practical, hands-on approach, integrating numerous examples, exercises, and case studies drawn from various academic fields. It aims to demystify the process of academic writing, empowering readers to communicate their research effectively and confidently on the international academic stage.
