Synopsis
This tale, one of Melville's shorter works of fiction, is a product of the strange and complex imagination that produced "Moby-dick". written "in prose nouveau riche in its verbal splendour, antiquarian in its delight, bible-echoed, allusive, elaborate".
they have the same compelling and mysterious power, defying ultimate interpretation. the selection includes "bartleby", "the enchanted", "benito cereno" (dramatized by robert lowell) and one of melville's supreme masterpieces, "billy budd, sailor". harold beaver's introduction and notes will aid the reader's understanding and enjoyment of one of the most allusive and book-haunted of all writers, 'now recognized as a giant among american men of letters', equal in his own sphere to the greatest of his european contemporaries.

It's a very bizzarre book, I don't think it's about fall from innocence, in my opinion, innocence remains intact till the very end. In many ways, the book reminds me of Hardy's Tess. The two books depict similar innocence prior to christinaity, something natural, pure ,wild, primordial and beautiful. There is condemation of war and the military rigidity in this book. The limited 3rd-person point of view and Budd's propensity to speak little renders him elusive and mysterious for me.

评分Sailors, sea shanties, and ballads這周讀的(最後的歌謠確實動人),還要去看一下Sedgwick讀齣瞭homophobia的分析。Very vague strains of Othello-Iago, but Billy isn't Othello really, and the Iago of this piece is cut short — 重點不在“用你的手毀滅你所愛的”而是“不惜毀滅自己(albeit involuntarily???)以毀滅對方”。如果Claggart在自己的死亡上錶現齣更多的agency會不會更perplexing? 他的死顯得太過無常。
