書的第一部分（從康德，黑格爾，到Schnaase, Semper和Goeller）寫得浮皮潦草，而恰恰這段時期在英文的研究裡還沒有更好的替代品。而第二部分 (裏格爾，沃夫林，Warburg, Panofsky)已經有更好的（至少是寫得更清楚的）研究與文集，如： Chris Wood編的Vienna School Reader (http://book.douban.com/subject/1388946/) 和Michael Ann Holly研究Panofsky的專著 (http://book.douban.com/subject/1474029/)，所以未免有些嚼雞肋的感覺。
