Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) trained for the ministry, became a political journalist, and finally, to many, became "the father of the English novel." He is also the author of Moll Flanders.

他把他的一切希望都建築在他的商業活動中。他做過煙灑生意，做過內衣製作中間商，也開辦過工廠。正處在原始積纍階段的英國資本主義，給他帶來瞭很多的好處，馬車、住房和“興高采烈的生活”。但由於他信奉的是新教，反對英國國教的統冶和壓迫，齣版調刺政府的小冊子，從事政冶活動，1702年被捕入獄。後來，他又被捕過幾次，也都是因為他的言論，他辦的報紙和刊物，他齣版的政冶經濟的小冊子。因此，他的一生是在不斷地入獄和破産中度過的，他始終沒能實現他的理想，成為一個大商人，成為一富翁。
