作者简介

Kevin Powers was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, and holds an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a Michener Fellow in Poetry. He served in the US Army in 2004 and 2005 in Iraq, where he was deployed as a machine gunner in Mosul and Tal Afar. This is his first novel.

我的同学里面有两位是我知道从阿富汗战场上回来的陆军，其中一位是拆弹部队的，服役8年，还有一位好像是sniper。我跟他们都不熟，他们平时笑的时候跟普通人没有什么区别，但是偶尔安静的时候，会露出那种作者Powers的神情，那是一种不可言喻的悲伤绝望，带着可怕的冷静甚至无所谓的漠然。

作者在书中以第一人称Bart分两条时间线叙述在伊拉克战争时和休假及退役后的生活。两个年轻人Bart21岁，Murph18岁，都为生存而战，详细的描述了他们在伊拉克作战的艰苦环境。战争是可怕的，军人也有权害怕，他们曾说宁愿美国马上投降，只希望自己远离这一切，这是人之常情。在战争中经常会看到战友死去，大多时候是听说某连死去了一个人，觉得很遥远，而当一个人死在M身旁时一切都变了，M心理极度恐惧与厌恶战争，尤其是当那个女医生也被炸死时，他彻底“死去”，裸奔出军营，最后被伊拉克人们残忍杀害，Bart找到他时隐瞒了这些，将他的尸体抛入河中。M的妈妈坚持要求真相，B被调查，为他就那么替她做了决定而付出牢狱1000多天的代价。B从战争中回来时，经历了很久封闭的生活，一直在逃避，战争对人的心理创伤是多么大啊
