達賴喇嘛格魯派最高領袖之一，達賴喇嘛尊號和其轉世製度始於第三世達賴喇嘛索南嘉措。公元1578年，藏曆第十饒迥陽土虎年，明神宗萬曆六年，當時格魯派大活佛索南嘉措應土默特濛古首領順義王俺達汗邀請赴濛古傳法，在青海仰華寺，索南嘉措對佛理的精深闡述，使俺達汗心生仰慕，於是贈送尊號“聖識一切瓦齊爾達喇達賴喇嘛”的稱號。“聖”，是超凡入聖，超齣塵世間之意；“識一切”，是藏傳佛教對在現宗方麵取得最高成就僧人的尊稱；“瓦齊爾達喇”，是梵文Vajradhra的音譯，即漢語執金剛之意，是藏傳佛教對於在密宗方麵取得最高成就僧人的尊稱；“達賴”，是濛古語大海之意，也是藉用藏語“嘉措”（大海）一詞而譯成濛古語的，因為二世達賴根敦嘉措、三世達賴索南嘉措名字中都含有“嘉措”；“喇嘛”，藏語是上師之意，是對有一定佛學造詣僧人的尊稱。公元1652年，藏曆第十一饒迥陽水龍年，清世祖順治九年，五世達賴阿旺洛桑嘉錯應順治帝邀請赴京覲見，並正式被冊封為“西天大善自在佛所領天下釋教普通瓦赤喇怛喇達賴喇嘛”，並賜金印金冊。

牙含章，1916年10月生於甘肅和政縣。1936年開始在拉蔔楞寺和拉隆哲蚌寺研究藏族史和藏傳佛教。1938年在陝甘寜邊區關中分區陝北公學學習。曾任中共西藏工委秘書長、內濛古大學副校長,中國無神論學會副會長,中國社會科學院民族研究所所長。1989年12月病逝。長期從事民族宗教問題研究,主要著作有《達賴喇嘛傳》、《班禪額爾德尼傳》、《無神論和宗教問題》等。主編《中國無神論史》。
