《红字》的情节并不复杂,其精华在于对人物的分析。霍桑认为“人心的真实重于情节和细节的真实”。小说中的三个主人公都身负罪恶,但是他们的结局却是不同。海斯特坦白地面对罪恶,甘愿受辱接受惩罚,以德行之美洗刷罪恶,终获新生。迪梅斯戴尔暗中负罪,备受良心煎熬,但在最后关头忏悔,依然得到了人们的谅解和宽容。齐林沃斯一心复仇,丧心病狂地从别人的痛苦中得到满足,是寸足的魔鬼化身。小说的结构、主人公的名字和出场都有精心的安排,在这里就不一一赘述了,请读者带着好奇之心,细细阅读吧!

首先要说的是这个英语版真不错,有很多的注释,毕竟是19世纪的文章,有很多的陌生词汇。 这不是一个通奸的故事,而是一个救赎的故事。 还有我想说的是,犯错不可怕,people make mistakes,关键在于去勇于纠正,对得起自己的良心。 之前看过一个走独木桥的故事:有三个结伴而行的人,走到了悬崖前,只有一座窄窄的独木桥,下面就是万丈悬崖。第一个人很大胆,毫不犹豫地走了过去,非常顺利地到达了对面,第二个人犹豫了一会儿,小心翼翼地走过去,却不小心滑了一脚,幸运的是他抱住了桥,慢慢爬了过去,而第三个人,顾虑太多,思考了好一会,终于决定走独木桥,直接从桥上掉了下去。 上帝说,犹豫越久的人受的痛苦也就也多,此书中的牧师也必然如此吧。但恰恰就是意味着痛苦,也就说明他还是值得被救赎的。

评分太爱霍桑了,当年被那篇the minister’s black veil折服,现在读红字,仍然惊心动魄,thoroughly impressed by its sublime beauty produced by symbolic and somber images!
