阴郁繁复的笔触之下性意指随处可见。不同于初始版本关于女性不应有好奇心的道德教育，卡特文本直指物化女性的男性凝视，以及自愿参与到物化过程的女性，最后的救赎是女人与盲人生活，不再被凝视，但额头仍有性背叛的红字。将十九世纪晚期法国符号代入，影射因魔鬼崇拜被处决的领导人。过于阴暗而精致，读着有如同金钥匙划遍全身肌肤的震颤。
